A spectacular show was the highlight of a colourful opening ceremony at the beautiful
GSP Stadium, just outside Nicosia, the Cypriot capital, yesterday evening.
Around 1,100 5-12-year-old schoolchildren took part in a programme which included
rhythmic gymnastics, dance, tennis, karate and taekwondo.
It also included performances by a large children's choir and 'Music Box', a dance show
with the participation of some of Cyprus's top dancers.
The famous tenor Marios Frangoulis then sang 'Love of Fire' to the great applause of the
crowd present.
There were also some traditional dances performed by about 250 children before the
official song of the Games, 'Journey to the Horizon' was sung by Frangoulis.
Another colourful part of the ceremony was the athletes' parade, in which the Maltese
athletes (some of them missed it as they had to go to bed early in view of early
commitments today) appeared smart in their track suits of red and white tops and blue
trousers.
The young (13 years old) gymnast Andreana Zammit (photo left) led the contingent as its
flag-bearer.
It was followed by the swearing in of the athletes, officials and the official opening of the
Games by his Excellency the President of Cyprus, Mr Demetris Christofias.
The torch was then carried to the altar which was lit. It will remain lit till the end of the
Games next Saturday.
It all ended with a 40-minute show by Mario Frangoulis and his band. He was
accompanied by talented singer Georgis Perris.
